Etymology – A MILF By Any Other Name

Oxford English Dictionary (OED) attributes the first use of the word MILF to the writing of L.A. Sutton in 1992. Turns out Sutton was a linguist at University of California, Berkeley who first documented students using the slang term.

The first appearance we could find on the internet was in 1995 in an erotica newsgroup. Out of curiosity we looked and found that in late 1998 someone registered the domain milf.com so that is likely when it started creeping into the adult industries vocabulary. A short four-letter domain would have been a good find back in those days.

The term exploded in popularity upon the release of the 1999 movie American Pie when Stifler’s mom (played by Jennifer Coolidge) had the boys all chanting MILF! MILF! MILF!

Milfy.com with a ‘Y’ was registered in 2000. Milfs.com with an ‘S’ was registered in 2001.

 

Historic MILFs – A Multimedia History of Lust

The world loves their middle-aged hotties. June Cleaver (Leave It to Beaver’s mom) was hot for the 1950s, Laura Petrie from the Dick Van Dyke Show was very hot, and Carol Brady of the Brady Bunch? Oh man don’t get us started! Heck even Barney Rubble’s wife Betty had some curves for a cartoon. Goth lovers still argue whether Morticia Addams or Lilly Munster is hotter. The mention of Freud’s Oedipus complex in the 1989 movie Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures had us rushing to the library to look up the meaning of the word.

Whatever generation you may be from, there is a chance you will find some inspiration from those fictional mom characters. The hot middle-aged mom theme was hitting hard on television in the early 2000s. The story lines of the shows may not have all been MILF / Cougar in nature, but the casts were filling primetime television with those sexy visuals.

Shows like Desperate Housewives (2004-2012), The Real Housewives Franchise (2006-Present with 27 spin-off series as of this writing) and Cougar Town (2009-2015) fueled the fire and solidified MILF’s status as a household name.

You may even have your own MILF awakening moment from a real-life hot mom. At least one of our team admitted to a crush on a friend’s aerobics instructor mom in the 1980s. Her answering the door in a leotard made a life-changing impression.

 

MILFs by the Numbers

The category of MILF has been in our theater system since we began to chart the categories in 2001. MILF content popularity exploded by early 2006 and has carved out its place in porn history ever since.

The oldest MILF movie which also happens to be categorized as a Cougar in the system is charmingly named – M.I.L.T.F. Mothers I’d Like To Fuck by Heatwave Entertainment. As you can see by the addition of the ‘T‘ in MILF in early 2002 the word was still evolving.

The popularity of MILF and Cougar content has extended the livelihoods of female stars exponentially. Up and coming young stars of today have the potential for longer careers than in the past, while women who want to enter the industry later in life can expect great opportunities as well.

There was even an equivalent male term in DILF – Dad I’d Like to Fuck which we included on the gay side of theater back in the day. That language fell out of favor on the gay side and eventually evolved into the Daddy category of content in 2017.

Cougar themed content came after MILF and charted on our system for the first time in 2003. It began to grow in popularity in a meaningful way by late 2007. It has always been less popular as it portrays the female actress as aggressively pursuing younger men. The content may have limited its audience slightly as it caters to younger men having an older woman fantasy and older women having a younger men fantasy. While both are valid audiences, older men are larger consumers of porn and more likely to favor the looks of MILF actresses without the Cougar storyline.

Cougar content is MILF content, but not all MILF content is Cougar content.
