The point-of-view style of filmmaking has only gotten more popular since exploding onto the scene in the early 2000’s, and it can make you feel like a star!

POV isn’t Gonzo but Gonzo is POV

POV is the first-person shooter version of porn. Gonzo is the Blair Witch version of porn. They are very similar, but POV you only see from the perspective of one person. In Gonzo porn they might hand the camera back and forth between participants or lay the camera off to the side and film back at the movies cast. These are relevant and if you went to film school, they would be important distinctions. For the average layman porn consumer, they are very similar. On a scene-by-scene level lots of Gonzo porn is POV. When you take the movie as a whole, a Gonzo movie is not entirely a POV movie. Think of Gonzo porn as being like found footage of someone filming Bigfoot in the wild then getting attacked and dropping the camera. Where POV would just be the guy filming Bigfoot in the wild and never dropping the camera. Never having Bigfoot pick up the camera and look into it at the end and smile.

Years ago, when we first decided to release category information in the AEBN Trends reports, we made a conscious decision to select one of the categories but not both categories to publish data on. Each movie that comes into our system is reviewed by a team of people and info such as stars, sex acts, and categories are added. Since many see Gonzo and POV as interchangeable categories, many of the movies at the time were labeled as both POV and Gonzo. Why did we choose POV instead of Gonzo as the primary of the two categories? POV is easier to understand for most people. Point Of View = POV. You see the action from one of the participants’ perspectives. Whereas to understand Gonzo, you need to understand the origin of the term Gonzo.

So what IS Gonzo, then?

Gonzo is a journalism term that was first used by Bill Cardoso a writer and editor to describe the writing style of Hunter S. Thompson. The average porn consumer would at this point be like huh? Journalism? Who are these people? Why is that Hunter name familiar? You may have read the book or watched the movie called Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? Johnny Depp played Hunter S. Thompson. Thompson also wrote a famous book about the Hell’s Angels. His writing style placed himself at the center of the story, and this style changed journalism in an important way. In the 1990’s porn producers adopted the journalism description to describe how some porn scenes were being shot. This is a lot to explain for the purpose of porn consumption, but we feel it’s important to know the difference.

Gay POV

Gonzo and POV are not a category description we use on the gay side of our theater system. Historically there has not been a great deal of content shot in this style on the gay side of the industry. If this style does become more commonplace, we would certainly review our decision to omit it. It is common for genres of content that gain popularity in one part of the industry to be copied in another part of the industry. Inspiration can come from anywhere and why not be inspired by our peers from within our own industry.
